Brussels Airlines confirmed on Thursday, 3 September, that pilots and cabin crew assigned to flights between Brussels Airport and Tel Aviv can withdraw when they feel psychologically unfit to operate the service, without fearing repercussions. The assurance followed talks with trade unions and allowed a scheduled flight to leave for Israel that day, according to BRUZZ, although it does not restore the exclusively voluntary staffing arrangement sought by ACV Puls.
The distinction matters for Belgium-based crews and passengers. Brussels Airlines now places Tel Aviv flights in its normal roster, while individual employees must invoke the aviation procedure known as “unfit to fly” if they cannot safely work. Company spokesperson Nico Cardone said management had listened to concerns about the route and reiterated that staff could use the procedure without sanctions. It remains unclear how refusals will be recorded, whether employees could face indirect career or financial effects, and whether the arrangement has satisfied the unions.
ACV Puls had filed a strike notice effective from 1 September after accusing the airline of abandoning an earlier understanding that Tel Aviv services would use volunteers. Union representative Jolinde Defieuw said staff had physical-safety, psychological and ethical concerns and argued that serious objections should be sufficient grounds to refuse a flight. The union threatened action limited to the Tel Aviv route and asked Belgium’s federal authorities to clarify how workers assigned to commercial services in conflict-affected areas should be protected, BRUZZ reported earlier this week.
Brussels Airlines presents the situation differently. The Lufthansa Group subsidiary says it initially used volunteers while cautiously restarting the route and returned to ordinary rostering after those operations were completed successfully. It says its own security specialists and the wider Lufthansa Group continuously assess conditions and can change procedures when necessary. In an earlier account of the airline’s security system, VRT NWS quoted security chief Joeri Hendrickx saying that the company does not operate without adequate safety guarantees.
The disagreement is therefore not a simple argument over whether aircraft can technically land at Ben Gurion Airport. It concerns who bears the residual risk when an airline’s operational assessment permits a flight but government advice still describes the destination as volatile. Belgium’s Foreign Affairs service continues to advise against non-essential travel to Israel and Jerusalem. Its guidance, updated on 1 July, also warns that Israeli airspace could close unexpectedly and notes continuing risks from missiles, drones and attacks. The advice is non-binding and addresses travellers rather than airline operations, so it does not itself prohibit commercial flights or settle an employment dispute.
That gap produces the two competing Belgian perspectives. Brussels Airlines treats a successful operational restart, specialist risk monitoring and the unfit-to-fly safeguard as sufficient to resume normal planning. ACV Puls argues that a conflict-affected destination cannot be treated as an ordinary assignment while federal travel advice remains cautionary, adding questions of conscience and mental strain to immediate aviation safety. No separate federal-government response to the union’s request had been reported by publication time.
The route has repeatedly reflected wider Middle East instability. Brussels Airlines and other Lufthansa Group carriers suspended Tel Aviv services several times after October 2023. The Belgian airline halted them again amid regional escalation before announcing in June 2026 that one weekly service would return from August, initially using employees with voluntary, administrative or training roles, according to Belga News Agency.
For travellers, Thursday’s departure shows that the link remains operational, but the strike notice and fast-changing security environment leave schedules vulnerable. For crews, the practical test will be whether “unfit to fly” functions as a genuinely consequence-free safeguard rather than an exceptional medical declaration carrying subtle pressure. The next signals will be ACV Puls’s response to the talks, any written staffing protocol, possible targeted industrial action and any revision of Belgium’s travel advice or the airline’s route schedule.
Impact
Regional — El centro de efectos inmediatos se encuentra en el aeropuerto de Bruselas, en Zaventem, donde se encuentran las tripulaciones afectadas y los pasajeros se unen al servicio directo a Tel Aviv.
