About

Charleroi is a city and a municipality of Wallonia, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It is the largest city in both Hainaut and Wallonia. The city is situated in the valley of the Sambre, in the south-west of Belgium, not far from the border with France. By 1 January 2008, the total population of Charleroi was 201,593.

CentreVille launched a six-day retail promotion on Monday, 31 August, involving 48 city-centre businesses and a minimum qualifying purchase of €20. Shoppers who most accurately estimate the combined price of the goods displayed at 30 Rue de Dampremy will win the entire window, provided they complete the entry correctly and answer a tie-breaking question.

The contest runs in participating shops until 5 September. Completed forms may be placed in one of seven collection boxes until 18:00 on 7 September, and the organiser plans to identify the winner on 9 September. The disclosed rules do not yet reveal the window’s total value, the number of individual prizes or how many entries are expected.

The first thing shoppers need to know is that entry is tied directly to spending: each €20 purchase tranche at a participating retailer provides one form, according to Charleroi CentreVille. Contestants are invited to inspect the central display and visit participating shops to establish the prices of contributed products. That turns the exercise into more than a single-store giveaway; it creates a route through the commercial centre.

Second, the participating businesses span a broad part of Charleroi’s consumer economy. The organiser’s list includes national department-store operator INNO, Librairie Molière, Royal Charleroi Sporting Club and IKKS, alongside independent hairdressers, cafés, games retailers, jewellers, clothing shops, an optician and a pharmacy. Their different products make the total difficult to calculate while illustrating the commercial variety concentrated around the centre.

Third, the promotion is aimed at converting footfall into sales. A household that intended to make a €20 purchase can enter without paying a separate fee, but the mechanism also encourages shoppers to cross the threshold or visit several businesses. For small retailers, even modest additional turnover can matter because staffing, rent and energy costs continue whether a shop is busy or quiet. The organiser has not published a sales target, so the economic effect will only be measurable if it later releases participation or turnover data.

Fourth, the timing is relatively supportive for Belgian retail, although national figures cannot describe conditions on an individual Charleroi street.

reported that retail sales volumes excluding fuel rose 3.3% in June 2026 compared with June 2025; household-equipment volumes increased 9.8% and textiles, clothing, footwear and leather rose 2.0%. The same data showed a 3.1% monthly increase from May after seasonal and working-day adjustment. Those comparisons point to improving national demand, not proof that every independent shop is benefiting equally.

Fifth, the contest sits within a wider effort to make central Charleroi competitive with peripheral shopping areas. The city says its retail landscape is anchored by Rive Gauche and Ville 2 but also competes with out-of-centre zones such as City Nord and Espace Nord, which together offer 100 businesses, 12 restaurants and 5,000 free parking spaces. During the 2026 summer holidays, the municipality and Shop in C therefore made 2,500 central parking places available free of charge, including spaces already free at the Grand Palais car parks.

For consumers, the immediate proposition is straightforward: buy something they need, retain the entry form and calculate carefully. For participating businesses, the more important test is whether the game produces repeat visits after the prize has been awarded. Entry closes on 7 September and the winner is due to be selected two days later; until then, the value of the window—and the promotion’s commercial return—remain unknown.

Context & what happens next

What to do

To participate, spend at least €20 at one of the 48 listed businesses; one form is issued for every €20 purchase tranche. Inspect the prize display at 30 Rue de Dampremy and submit a valid estimate of its combined value no later than 18:00 on 7 September 2026. There is no separate entry fee, but participation requires a qualifying purchase. The closest valid estimate wins all displayed goods, and the winner is scheduled to be designated on 9 September 2026.

Impact

Regional — The action supports Charleroi’s central shopping streets as they compete with large malls and peripheral retail zones offering extensive free parking.

What the main actors are doing

Reported positions, summarised — not direct quotations

Participating city-centre retailers

The 48 participating businesses have a shared incentive to use the contest as a route between shops, exposing customers to retailers they might otherwise pass. Each qualifying purchase also creates an immediate transaction rather than merely generating foot traffic.

Budget-conscious Charleroi households

The chance to win a collection of goods may make an already planned purchase more attractive, but linking entries to €20 spending tranches can also encourage discretionary purchases. The household value depends on whether customers buy needed goods rather than spend principally to improve their odds.

Peripheral shopping-centre operators

Large out-of-centre retail zones compete through convenience, concentrated choice and plentiful free parking. A temporary city-centre contest provides novelty, but it does not by itself resolve structural differences in accessibility, parking capacity or the ease of visiting multiple stores.
