Updated 3 September 2026, 12:00 CEST — HERKENBOSCH, Netherlands. Flemish, Dutch and German authorities agreed on Wednesday, 2 September, to strengthen their joint prevention of and response to major wildfires. Flemish Environment Minister Jo Brouns, Dutch minister Jaimi van Essen and North Rhine-Westphalia minister Silke Gorißen made the commitment during a wildfire network meeting with fire services, land managers, public officials and specialists, according to the Province of Limburg.
The agreement links five existing projects rather than creating a single new emergency service. The province said they cover shared risk analysis, professional training, public information, faster detection and coordination across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Fire-Watch uses cameras at strategic locations, while the three-country Hawkeye project concentrates on early detection and crisis coordination in the Meuse-Rhine region.
For Flanders, the programme adds a cross-border layer to work already under way. Brouns said the region is investing in faster detection, adapted management of natural areas and better preparation for drought and extreme weather. The Flemish-Dutch Nature Fire Management project brings fire brigades, municipalities and land managers together around prevention, suppression and recovery, according to the Interreg programme.
The practical stakes are clearest in connected heathland and forests. Staatsbosbeheer says natural areas in Flanders and the southern Netherlands sit close to homes, workplaces and essential infrastructure. It also says responders historically planned, trained and fought fires separately on either side of the border. Participants have already met at the cross-border Kalmthout Heath and in the Kempen and Postel woodland area.
Cooperation with Germany is further advanced in parts of Dutch Limburg. The Limburg-Noord safety region says its German-Dutch programme, running from October 2024 through 2027, maps risks in eight border areas and supports joint exercises, additional water points and wet firebreaks. North Rhine-Westphalia also recently sent specialist vehicles and crews to assist at a wildfire in Belgium’s High Fens, according to Gorißen.
The next test is implementation: whether authorities can align communications, operating procedures and access to personnel and equipment before another fast-moving fire crosses a border. No new combined budget, command structure or timetable for all five projects was announced. The partners will now continue the projects’ exercises, risk mapping and detection work.
Impact
Regional — La participation flamande se concentre en particulier sur les zones chaudes et boisées vulnérables à proximité de la frontière néerlandaise, notamment Kalmthout Heath et les forêts de Kempen et Postel.
